Meeting with José Luís Peixoto

What if suddenly, on a stroll through Galveias, enjoying the evening, we bumped into a great writer from Alentejo?

That's exactly what happened!

When we left the house, simply to take a walk around our region and enjoy the sunshine at the beginning of summer, we had no idea that our steps would cross paths with this writer whom we love so much, but have only learnt about through reading his books.

It was at the sound of the fountain in this magnificent village of Galveias that we met the writer José Luís Peixoto and talked to him about his books and admired the simplicity of a writer of genius.

"A Mercearia"

"A Mercearia" was born out of an enormous desire to create a unique place where you could taste the best regional products and traditional flavours of the Alto Alentejo, including our "Ginjinha Franciscana".

A traditional, family-run 100% concept, "A Mercearia" is a place where you can enjoy the noblest grape varieties and taste the best delicacies, while also taking in temporary exhibitions by local artisans.

Opened in June 2016 in a place with a traditional architectural style, recognisable by its 19th/20th century furniture and the stonework on its windows, it is a very special place that combines gastronomy and culture.

Discover "A Mercearia" in Rua José Maria Casqueiro in the heart of Crato's historic centre, where you can also find various cultural monuments.

"A Mercearia" is proof that the Alentejo is more alive than ever and the friendly Catarina is waiting for you.

Casa do Peso - Alojamento Local em Vale do Peso

One of the missions of the Franciscan Larder is to publicise the diversity of Alto Alentejo, contribute to an increase in visitors to the region and the growth of the local economy. A Casa do Peso é um dos parceiros da Despensa Franciscana e fica situado em Vale do Peso - Crato!

So we went to meet the current owner of Casa do Peso, Jorge Lozano, who kindly introduced us once again to this local accommodation, which is more like a family home, where all guests are treated as if they were part of it. This place is particularly suitable for families looking for a refuge as if it were their own country house. With a view of the Serra de S. Mamede, this accommodation invites you to relax in full communion with nature. The ideal place for those looking to disconnect from the frenetic city life and have a stay to recharge their batteries. To make your stay even more enjoyable, you'll also have the opportunity to taste a Franciscan Ginjinha!

Casa do Peso is an 18th century country manor house, built by Manuel Martins Durão, a wealthy landowner and farmer from the municipality of Crato, in 1740. Inherited by Maria Cassiana de Sande as a dowry from her marriage to Tomé de Barros Castelo Branco, it is now owned by her great-great-grandchildren, the Lozano Family. The current owners have refurbished the house, adapting it so that it can comfortably accommodate guests in 10 rooms (some of which are suites).

This intervention sought to preserve the character of the house, making no changes to the façade and carefully respecting the internal architecture, furnishings and finishes of the period. The aim was to provide the house with the comfort required today, with all the rooms having private bathrooms, central heating and air conditioning, period furniture and decoration, and high-quality replicas, in a mixed thematic concept, all based on Portuguese Tradition, History and Culture. The house now has ten bedrooms, several living rooms, an interior patio, a garden and a swimming pool.
